Harriet Mena
Hill ‘Blue Sky Grey Depth’
It was Iris Murdoch who once
observed that the key element in
any work of art – novel,
symphony, painting or ballet –
lies in its innate ability to create a
space for the viewer to enter and
participate within it. With her
persistent and tenacious pursuit
of an imagined architectural
landscape over some 30 years of
painting, Harriet Mena Hill
(
Eagle/EMH Arts,
map 30)
seems to be doing just this and
to ever subtler and more moving
effect. Exhibiting recent work
together with some earlier
(2012) panel paintings that were
at Worcester Cathedral, she
does, to a quite remarkable
degree, make the ‘slow looking’
of an engaged viewer a vital
element in the work’s realized
power – both ecstatic and
contemplative.
