Sarah Ball describes her startling
work as that of “a gatherer, a
curator of objects and ideas that
are concerned with the visual
language of the storyteller”, the
stories she chooses to tell in her
strange and compelling portraits
being entirely imagined out of
the anonymous faces she found
in her collections of photography,
a process of inventing histories
for them in fact. Her latest show,
entitled ‘Damaged Humans’
(

at
Coningsby,
map 22)
takes these ideas a stage
further, exploring, through
photography, the Victorian idea
that facial ‘types’ could predict
mental illness. Here the lives of
unknown soldiers, patients,
prisoners and women and their
unknown woes and suffering live
again under her imaginative and
tender gaze.
