This didn't lead to conventional studies in art school – the drawings he then made from memory of the things he'd been looking at so carefully had probably already impelled him past this process – but took him a rather more unconventional route, via precision engineering and then traditional cabinet making à la Thomas Chippendale. The sculpture he made to embellish these pieces then led him to a degree in Renaissance sculpture, and ultimately to the remarkable anatomical studies of animals – horses, lions et al that make up his latest show at M oMA Machynlleth – a kind of Modern Baroque.
