Except, in the case of Nicole Farhi, you would be completely wrong. Taking it up part time in her 40s and with subsequent mentoring from Eduardo Paolozzi, Farhi went full time six years ago, in the process showing herself to have a genuinely original voice. Portrait busts and abstract pieces were her initial subjects but now, in her first show at B eaux Arts London, she explores new territory, the female figure, through life size replicas of sections of their rippling torsos. But, as the name of one of her models, Sue Tilley of Lucian Freud fame, might suggest, these are no fashion models, more Jenny Saville meets Rodin. And it’s powerful stuff.
