Born in 1929 he had enjoyed a solid academic trainingat Irish art schools of the late 1940s, become apprenticed to the great Irish Romantic painter Seán Keatingand looked all set for a solid career as a figurative painter there. A chance invitation in 1953 from a friend to spend the summer workingand paintingin Swanage changed all that however. Landscape, colour and light quickly got to him as did the work of such St Ives’ painters as Hilton, Wallis, Nicholson and Scott, and he never looked back. He revelled in the rich variety of Modernist paths now open to him, as this major retrospective exhibition of paintings spanning six decades (he died in 2017) at B elgrave St Ives, joyously confirms.
