But that is exactly what collector Simon Hearnden did when he came across the work of the enigmatic West German painter/printmaker Walter Lindner on a trip to Germany some 12 years ago, just a year before the artist's death aged 71. With the proceeds he bought most of the work in the artist's studio and from his gallery dealer. An exhibition of some 35 of them at D avid Simon Contemporary this month now forms what is, in effect, a small retrospective. Paintings and monotypes embellished with ink, watercolour and gold leaf and printed on parchment, they have a delicate, poetic quality not unlike Paul Klee. Some discovery!
