Key to this was the decision to bypass mainstream art schools and go to study for two years in Charles H Cecil's academic atelier in Florence where he learnt the Old Master method of ‘sight size’ drawing and painting, therock on which all his later work has come to depend. His latest show at Gallery 8 focusses on his landscapework and studies including cattle, horses and animals – what heterms his ‘hobby’ – his studies of Scottish and English landscapes revealing a vibrant, colouristic approach very much in the spirit of Peploe.
