It contains L.S. Lowry’s endearingly unsentimental study of schoolboys running furiously against a burnished industrial sky, and celebrates that early, astoundingly fertile period when Christopher Wood and Ben and Winifred Nicholson worked together, inspired by the fresh impulse of Alfred Wallis’s art – seen in Ben’s austere yet vibrantly measured Still Life – Bankshead (c.1925) of glowing fruits and monochrome bottle on a tabletop; Wood’s 1928 beatifically enigmatic, monumental portrait, The Blue THUMB nails
