Ives Harbour , a marvellously assured, primordial composition of tempestuous spontaneity. Other highlights include Winifred Nicholson’s luminous, paradisical Hayfield (c.1940), visionary wartime gouaches of miners, quarrymen, furnace workers by Graham Sutherland, and Mary Newcomb’s intuitively sophisticated, hauntingly elegaic Hoers Going Home (1971).
