William Wyllie (in the First World War) and Richard Eurich (in the Second) were painting in the tradition of seafarers and naval eyewitnesses going back to the 17th C. Highlights here include Epstein’s vigorously unsparing 1916 bust of the pugnacious Admiral Lord Fisher; the poignant if propagandist story behind Ambrose McEvoy’s 1918 monochrome oil of a 16 year old seaman; Eurich’s visionary yet highly focused panoramas of battleships and aerial bombardments; Ravilious’s intimately modernist views of glistening, otherworldly submarine interiors; William Dring’s probing, sensitive portraits of Second World War seamen; and Rosemary Rutherford’s humane, fluidly expressionist depictions of wounded and convalescing sailors.
