A move to a remote part of Wales in the late 70s and then his death at just 71, right at the point when he might have taken up the role of a ‘grand old man’ of abstraction, can’t have helped, but just looking at the rich, austere power of this latest group, dating from 1972-2003 it is nonetheless puzzling. Wanting to create “ordinary paintings as ordinary as the real world” Green ended up achieving an almost Zen-like sense of calmness and quiet authority, colour and its application dictating the form. Always most closely associated with his iconic constructivist sculpture in plastic and bronze, Naum Gabo’s THUMB nails
