SternPissarro Gallery
celebrates its fiftieth
anniversary this year,
and in its current
highlights exhibition it
draws on the artistic
legacy of the Pissarro
family which is older
still. It all started 184
years ago with the
birth of Camille
Pissarro (1830-1903),
or, perhaps more
accurately, twenty five
years later, when the
young artist moved to
Paris and began
painting in earnest.
Today he is often cited
as one of the fathers of
Impressionism, and in
his day was the only
artist to exhibit in all
eight of the Paris
Impressionist
exhibitions. As well as
collaborating with
various artists
professionally, he also
instructed his children
which led to future
generations of artistic
output within his family.
Despite their
common origin, works
by the younger
Pissarros demonstrate
a variety of interests.
Ludovic-Rodo’s (1878-
1952) pallid dancing
girls, for example, show
his love of Parisian
nightlife and a tendency
towards dark humour;
Paulémile’s (1884-
1972) landscape views
of the River Epte reflect
his concern with
expressing depth of
field; and his son
Hugues Claude’s
(b.1935) coastal
scenes, created by
building up layers of
oils and scraping them
away as they dry, reveal
his fascination with
texture.
Hugues’ daughter
Leila now runs the
gallery, along with her
husband David Stern.
It’s clear that they have
a commitment to
represent a wide
variety of established
artists, made apparent
by the selection of
some dazzling works,
such as Kees van
Dongen’s
Portrait de
Madame van der
Velde
. In addition,
works by contemporary
artists including
Damien Hirst and
Zhang Dali are also
on show. In all it seems
that Pissarro’s artistic
legacy is one that will
continue for many
anniversaries to come.

Goodbye
to the Riverside Studios building in
Hammersmith – arts centre, TV production hub
and
Galleries’
office, which is being pulled down to
be rebuilt on a grander scale, but with luck
retaining the friendly atmosphere . . .
In the meantime
Galleries
will be moving down
the road to a decommissioned 'Virus Lab' (!) near
Charing Cross Hospital – we'll certainly miss the
excellent bar with its riverside terrace. Contact
details are the same, though the postal address
from September 5th will be:
