MICHAEL HOPPEN GALLERY
3 Jubilee Place, SW3 3TD
Negativeless.
Sep 19–Oct 24.
In a worldof photography where
Jennifer McRae ‘Asparagus’
‘Fact and Fantasy’ is an
exhibition of 30 unseen works
from the past two years by
Royal Scottish Academician
Jennifer McRae. The artist’s
printmaking background
resonates in her ability to capture
both essence and detail in even
the most epic of backgrounds,
such as her latest prizewinning
Conversations with Duncan
(2014). Most famous for her
portraits – commissions
include Dame Judi Dench and
Tim Berners-Lee – McRae can
animate a face through the glint
of an eye. While her awkward
and earnest style reminds me of
Alice Neel’s, she pays equally
close attention to the every day,
so that still lives like
Asparagus
take on an almost sacred quality.
