The artist at home and abroad
August 19 to September 30, 2007
Having spent a month-long residency at Collioure, in South West France, where Charles Rennie Mackintosh spent his last four years, Douglas Davies has returned to Scotland with an armful of finished paintings to form one half of his exhibition at Broughton Gallery which runs from 19 August. The other half of Douglas show comprises his Scottish landscapes.
Davies’ response to the terraced vineyards around Collioure is, as always, poetic rather than literal: he responds to his subject by abstracting its essential qualities of line, tone and colour. His technique is spontaneous and his instincts create an element of serendipity. The result is painting that can be appreciated at both a figurative and an abstract level.
