PRESS RELEASE

BraveArt 2007 20th – 23rd September 2007
Atlantis Gallery, Old Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, London E1
Press and Private View Weds 19th September, 6-9pm

15 graduates from Scotland’s art colleges have now been selected to show their work as part of BraveArt 2007, a unique project that allows students from the four Scottish art schools to showcase their work at a public exhibition in London.
Supported by Standard Life PLC, BraveArt invites a distinguished art world panel to select the most talented and innovative graduates across the fine art disciplines. The year’s selection panel are - Katharine Burton – Simon Lee Gallery, James Lindon – Victoria Miro Gallery, Francois Chantala – Thomas Dane Gallery , Alice Correia – Gimpel Fils, Elena Crippa – Lisson Gallery. The four participating schools are The Glasgow School of Art, Edinburgh College of Art, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee, and Grays' School of Art in Aberdeen.

It is a well-known fact that the majority of art students who do not attend London colleges find it very difficult to get noticed by the art world. It was for this reason that Edinburgh based Standard Life created BraveArt in 2003 to enable talented art students the opportunity to display their work in London and to help young artists from Scottish art schools make the leap from student to professional artist. Since its inception over a hundred graduates have had the opportunity to show their work in London through BraveArt.

The change of venue in 2005 to The Atlantis Gallery in East London, has enabled Braveart to encompass a wider range of art and artists than ever before including monumental installations, sculpture and audio-visual works as well as painting, drawing and photography. It is pleasing to note that in many cases last year artists sold all of their works and that several have gone on to further success. Morag Keil was subsequently selected to take part in Bloomberg’s New Contemporaries and both Marie Harnett and Jessica Harrison were invited to show in Art Futures 2007. Many have also established relationships with commercial galleries. This year’s panel have pared the number of selected artists down to 15 (two of whom work as a collaboration) and made their final selections on a unanimous basis.

We are very excited about Brave Art 2007 as we believe it appeals to a wide and varied audience. We would very much appreciate any mention or feature you are able to make in your events and arts listings. Braveart is participating in London Design Week’s Tent London.
