Mythical theme for 8th Newby Hall Sculpture Park

The Newby Hall Sculpture Park is now a regular feature in the Northern Arts Calendar, establishing for Newby a tremendous reputation for the display of high standard art.

Established by Lucinda Compton, wife of the present owner and herself a professional furniture restorer, the sculpture park continues a 250 year tradition of displaying sculpture at Newby

As well as the beauty of the setting, Newby's Sculpture Park also hosts a completely new selection of exhibition works each year. Uniquely at Newby, famous artists and new sculptors exhibit side by side and the range of materials, subjects and styles, is as wide ranging as the tastes and interests of visitors to the estate. In this eighth year, for example, works range from a glass skateboard to a pack of willow Beagles, ethereal cast glass sculptures, painted Bat roosts, a giant bronze ammonite, carvings in stone and wood and abstract works on both a heroic scale out of doors and tiny maquettes indoors.

This year a number of works by contemporary artists take classical myths as their subject. Reece Ingram’s Three Graces, Deirdre Hubbard’s Amazon, Helen by David Williams Ellis and Trojan Horse by Antonia Spowers have their counterparts in the Sculpture Gallery in Newby Hall. There, many of the marbles in probably the finest collection of Roman statuary in private hands in Britain, have been cleaned during the winter, revealing breathtaking detail and their true beauty.

Famous water sculptor, William Pye unveiled his permanent water sculpture at Newby Hall & Gardens for the official opening of the 2008 Sculpture Park

William Pye, best known for his sculptures at Gatwick Airport and London’s South Bank, has designed a permanent water sculpture for the adventure garden at Newby called Tarantella. Its computer controlled ‘laminar’ jets, will allow visitors to interact with the water.

William Pye commented: “'Transforming what was a paddling pool into an entirely new water sculpture has been a unique and very interesting challenge.”

Newby Hal Sculpture Park is open:

June – end Sept 11am – 5pm daily (closed on Mondays in June & Sept)
