Majestic and awe-inspiring, Jean Marc Huss images create an atmosphere of absolute calm and serenity”

- Hilary Binks, Journalist and Writer

One thousand years ago, the Khmer Empire of ancient Cambodia gave birth to some of the world’s finest and richest works of art. Their civilisation extended throughout continental South – East Asia and culminated in the construction of the magnificent Angkor Wat. It is an aesthetic triumph that has imprinted on these icons the touching beauty of the human face. And because they were done out of space and time, they still, even today, dominate the one and defy the other. Since moving to Thailand 25 years ago, French painter Jean – Marc Huss has succeeded in translating the timeless grace and beauty of Buddha images on to canvas, in a stupefying palette of textures and patinas. An impeccable photo – realistic oil painting technique and mastery of light and shade are the qualities for which Huss is greatly admired. Often done on a monumental scale, his works are featured are featured in public and private collections worldwide.

Jean- Marc pays particular attention to the individual quality of each Buddha image – their different postures and gestures as well as the materials from which they are made. Using oil paint, gold leaf, and other secret ingredients he depicts the ancient patina of stone statues worn by thousands of years of monsoon rains; the warmth of gold leaf that flakes off in patches over time; the textures of verdigris on centuries – old bronze.

In this collection Soul of Asia, Jean Marc Huss has introduced a new stylistic theme of paintings on Chinese antiquities from ceramics to Tang dynasty antiquities. They are exquisitely painted in a way that is almost as delicate as the works themselves.
