PRESS RELEASE
COVENTRY COMES TO WELLS
Sculptures by TERENCE COVENTRY at the Bishop’s Palace, Wells
21st March – 31st Oct 2008
There can be few more beautiful places in the whole of England than the medieval moated Bishop’s Palace and Gardens, home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for the past 800 years.
It is in this captivating setting that sculptor Terence Coventry has been invited by ….the present Bishop to exhibit his powerful yet tender work.
The exhibition is curated by Gallery Pangolin, with whom Coventry has worked since he began casting in bronze in the late eighties. Pieces on show include ten monumental outdoor sculptures placed throughout the grounds and a group of smaller bronzes in the atmospheric Medieval Entrance Hall. The sculptures can be viewed throughout the summer (Mar – Oct) in this beautiful garden with its backdrop of breathtaking architecture.
Between 18th May and 17th July 2008, there will also be an exhibition of Coventry’s smaller bronzes and drawings in The East Gallery.
Inspired by the surroundings of his windswept farm on a Cornish peninsula, Terence Coventry’s work is engaging and compelling, encouraging the viewer to return time and again to enjoy the strong but gentle presence of his sculptures. The stimulus of the land and its occupants is central to his oeuvre: its ruggedness and gentleness; their movement and behaviour. The intensity of the relationship between his subjects and their environment is reflected in the geometric forms and craggy texture of his work. Rooted in a strong figurative tradition, Coventry’s sculptures explore familiar themes: birds, bulls, cows and boars as well as the human figure, a preoccupation to which he frequently returns.
The Bishop’s Palace and Gardens are open 10.30 – 5pm Sun. – Fri. and 10.30 – 1pm. Sat. Tel; 01749 677698 www.bishopspalacewells,co,uk Admission charges apply.
