George Fullard: Sculpture and Survival

7th November - 16 December

2016

Tucked away in the village of

Chalford on the slopes of the

Cotswold escarpment, Gallery

Pangolin is one of the few

galleries to specialise in sculpture

and related works on paper.

Over the past twenty-five years

the gallery has established a

reputation for works of quality

and excellence by Modern and

contemporary artists.

■Gallery Pangolin is proud to

represent the Fullard Estate and

this major retrospective is the

first solo exhibition of his work

since 1998. The show brings

together bronzes, assemblages

and drawings from all periods of

Fullard’s oeuvre, including many

previously unseen pieces.

Director of the gallery Jane Buck says:

“Although publicly and critically acclaimed during the golden age of Post-War

British sculpture in the late 1950’s and ‘60’s, following his early death in 1974

George Fullard’s work slipped into relative obscurity. The recent surge in interest

in this period has seen a growing regard for his work and our exhibition is a timely

opportunity to re-assess and acknowledge this intriguing and underrated artist.”

Exhibition and Book Launch

George Fullard: Sculpture and Survival

7th November - 16th December

2016

To accompany the exhibition, Gallery Pangolin has commissioned a new

monograph on Fullard by author and art historian Michael Bird which will

be launched at the exhibition. Bird’s research into the Fullard archive and

interviews with people who knew him, inform a timely reappraisal of one of

the most distinctive and surprising British artists of the twentieth century.

■ In his Foreword to the new book, art critic Julian Spalding says of Fullard:

He was modern because he lived in modern times, not because he leapt

onto a bandwagon. His art flowers within the radiance of Rodin, then Picasso,

and then he created his own idiom, but all of these expressions are genuine

and profound.”
