With a horseracing tradition that goes back to King Charles II it is no surprise that the

horse remains supreme in Newmarket where the National Horseracing Museum stands.

Lawrence has chosen racehorses and Newmarket Heath as an integral part of her recent

work in this exhibition in the Museum.

Her father was a National Hunt trainer and her ex- husband, Lord Oaksey, a renowned

amateur jockey, writer and commentator on racing while the artist was a successful

show jumper and eventer. The fearlessness she displayed in the ring and out hunting

manifests itself here in the intensity of these richly executed oil paintings. The variety

of landscape surrounding the town is portrayed with a delicate and restrained passion.

The artist’s original contemporary vision reinvents traditional sporting art. Strings of

racehorses, galloping or returning home are painted against the vast skies and grand
