MARCUS GREY

INDIAN SUMMER

Marylebone, November 2011: Set to radiate against the dark wintery skies of

London, Indian Summer by Marcus Grey is Price Davies Fine Art’s first solo exhibition

with the artist, to be held in January 2012.

Inspired by Grey’s experiences of

India while travelling there in 2003 and 2004, this new exhibition of contemporary oil-

on-canvas paintings and works on paper will run from Monday 16th to Saturday

21st January 2012 at The Gallery, 54 Shepherd Market, London, W1J 7QX

Grey’s fascination with light, colour and space are evident in this vibrant

contemporary exhibition where abstract forms make way for isolated colour. It reflects

the bright skies and unique landscape of India, expressed in lyrical, vibrant panes of

colour, which developed as Grey’s palette attuned to the surroundings.

Dreamlike scenarios with Tachiste settings allow for the integration of both real and

invented emblematic figures and objects, which, layered over each other, merge and

break the delicate and extemporaneous boundary lines of different realities. Motifs

unify and float across this luminous esoteric world.

In such pieces as Vision at the Impeccable Gates (pictured above) and She Stood

within Shadow (below), a diary begins to grow of the visible world, with later

reinterpretation finding a new reality.

Grey explains, “the works on paper were painted in the field as a continuous diary of

my day-to-day experience with India, while the oils developed over time, based on my

memories, reflections and spiritual connection with the country - rich visual evocations

of the sights and sounds are reflected in my work.”

Describing his work as hermetic-imagist in style, Grey acknowledges the impact that

different cultures have on his work. The exhibition will also preview pieces from

Grey’s Moroccan Winter.

Now residing on the Kent coast, Grey’s move to the area, along with several other

prominent modern British artists, shows that the tradition of the artists' colony is still

thriving.
