Emma Somerset Davis W I L D E R N E S S 8th - 25th October 2020 Opening 8th October at 7.30 pm on Zoom Anna Lovely Gallery 140 Sydenham Road London SE26 5JZ PRESS RELEASE WILDERNESS explores Emma’s durational relationship with the landscape, incorporating her body as site. Two streamed live performances are the focus of the exhibition, together with a collection of the traces of a series of time based works. Made live, these include four large scale paintings, works on textiles and paper, and sculptural pieces. Emma makes works through live performance to explore a personal, social and material relationship to natural and built spaces. Using the body as a site she negotiates desire, pain, conflict, sexuality, class, birth and loss, encountering materials, spaces and her relationship to others. Emma’s live work engages in the moment of doing, through actions and labours that continue to inhabit spaces beyond the making, in traces of drawing, painting, and sculpture. This unmaking of emotion, negotiates an individual and collective politics concerned with feminism, pluralism, empathy and the environment. Working in the UK and internationally, both in public space, festivals and major galleries and museums, including Manifesta, Venice Biennale, Tate Gallery, The V and A, Vienna Succession and PS1. Her performances are grounded in a substantial practice in painting, drawing, sculpture, sound and poetry. Emma’s work is included in private and public collections.
