Material Wonder. Until Apr 6. October Gallery Celebrates 40 Years. Apr 11–May 25. London based, a Dutch expat living abroad, Tanja Möderscheim brings her still life paintings to a contemporary audience using classical Dutch techniques. The choice of subject matter is equally reminiscent of the bygone era – fruit, vegetables, tableware, flowers – set in “a context of space and stilness in order to convey a meditative state: I’m trying to paint silence.” Tulips, of course, are high on the list of Dutch passions; as part of her exploration of her native cultural heritage, Tanja sources 16th to 19th century bulbs from the Hortus Bulborum gene bank in Holland fromwhich she produces an annual series of tulip paintings among many other projects including profiling French artisans and studying Roman tableware. To be found regularly exhibiting on the gallery and art fair circuit, Tanja is at the C ontemporary Art Fair this month at Sandown Park Racecourse in Esher, with more than 160 fellow artists.
