Tue–Sun 11–5 t 01424 201636 info@hastingsartsforum.co.uk www.hastingsartsforum.co.uk While he was still a teenager, John Piper had jumped on his bike and visited most ofthe churches within a 30 mile radius ofhis home. By the time he died in 1992 he seems to have painted, drawn or photographed practically every one ofany significance in England and Wales along with most ofthe great houses and historic ruins. His impassioned visual evocations ofthe country’s architectural heritage and their significance for the national psyche have been of incalculable importance in post- war conservation efforts, changing the way we looked at and valued our building heritage. B ohun Gallery’s 2018 biennial Piper show ‘A Very English Artist’ focuses on this particular aspect of his work – my pick, his evocative painting of Snargate on Romney Marsh, painted to help save the area’s churches. Piper’s work is also at Goldmark Gallery this month.
