This can be everything from “time capsules of the local community” – beekeepers smoking their hives, men at work dry stone walling and horticulturalists in their greenhouses, or just straightforwardly lyrical depictions of a country scene – a bluebell wood or hedgerow. What they all have in common is a wonderful directness of vision, not simply reminders of life but, as he likes to quote Lucien Freud, “with a life of their own”. Showing new paintings at T he Bishop’s Palace. NU THUMB nail Martin Bentham ‘Beech Trees, Stockhill, February’
