New MAP 10 UK WEST COUNTRY Better known for his massive, site specific public sculptures across Europe and Japan, Japanese artist Hironori Katagiri has decided that his latest show at the B irch Tree Gallery in Edinburgh should focus instead on the less familiar abstract colour pencil drawings which he is showing here for the first time alongside smaller domestic-scale stone carvings. Drawing has always been an essential part of his sculptural practice but here they have been specifically made as an exhibition in their own right, Katagiri revelling in the freedom they allow him from the refined purity of form and sense of gravity implicit in the sculpture. Cutting, reversing and replacing sections of vivid colour, he creates images which, as he puts it “are more immediate responses to the ebb and flow of life . . . an alternative reality of space and texture.” NU THUMB nail Hironori Katagiri ‘Lifetide-kyun’
