The breathtaking variety M 5 HONITON EXETER c b A MAP 10 UK WEST COUNTRY There are two things artist Tom Coates takes with him wherever he travels – in the last two years this has included India, Egypt and Morocco as well as Italy and France – his sketchbook and his specially designed pochade box, the plein air painter’s essential piece of equipment, a portable box incorporating a small easel and storage space for canvases and paints. Armed with this wonderfully traditional item, Coates takes off into the landscape to see what he can see, his seemingly effortless painterly skills and acute perception of tonal values ensuring an always intense sense of place and atmosphere, the castle walls in a small French town shimmering in summer heat or the chaotic, bustling excitement of a Marrakesh market, translated onto a canvas barely a foot or two square.
