He has brought together the 94 year old Warren MacKenzie, who learned his trade on the kick wheels of the Leach Pottery in the late 1940s, and one of his pupils, Randy Johnston. What these potters have in common is a great respect for the tradition of their craft (Johnston was also apprenticed to Shimaoka in Japan, where he developed his love of wood-fired kilns) combined with a desire to expand the aesthetic of functional pot making. These two great teachers are credited with bringing Japanese Mingei style of pottery to Minnesota, fondly referred to as the ‘Mingei-sota’. Sarah Drury THUMB nail Randy Johnston ‘Teapot’
