landscape colouring that Cornwall does so well. Alongside this are hand-thrown porcelain ceramics by studio potter Hugh West, and hand-carved, gilded sculpture by stone carver Peter Graham. NU Later in the month is the self- styled ‘Walking Artist’ Hamish Fulton, celebrating the 45th anniversary of his commitment as an artist to walking, with work made from a 12 day walk in Cornwall in which he joined up seven previously completed walks in the West of England. “If I do not make a walk, I cannot make any art” he once observed – here photography, illustrations and wall panels testify to the lived, human experience of nature. On the stunning Roseland Peninsula is artist Judi Green’s well established Tregony Gallery which she took on a few years back. Not taking the easy option of ‘tourist-led’ art she has chosen to show the work of ‘proper’ painters and doing thoughtful and revealing exhibitions on themes like light and landscape. The current show ‘Emergent Forms’, illustrates the way ‘an artist’s expression of form crystallises during the eye-to-hand process of creation.’ With artists like Jason Bowyer, Ivy Smith, Gethin Evans, Martin Dunford and Daniel Preece (as well as herself) to demonstrate, these add up to some pretty substantial shows. Another artist-led gallery on Roseland is Chris Insoll’s The New Gallery at Porthscatho which he founded some 34 years ago in a very small room, as the Porthscatho Art Society. It’s grown considerably since then of course, moving in 2000 to a much larger space and renaming appropriately enough, to The New Gallery. The general style and ethos has not changed however, viz an eclectic artist’s house with paintings and prints stacked everywhere and a nice big sofa in the middle of it all to sit and consider possible purchases. As the crow flies north, beach resort Polzeath is to be found, and Whitewater Gallery’s high season exhibition showing work by painter Suki Wapshott, inspired by the coastline in and around the village – that special subtle light and above J ennifer Pochinski ‘Blond in the White Chair’ Tregony Gallery T HE NEW GALLERY P ORTSCATHO C ornwall TR2 5HW T: 01872 580445 chrisinsoll.com chrisinsoll@gmail.com www.thenewgalleryportscatho.co.uk Chris Insoll oil on a curtain 36 x 48 inches JULY 2018 GALLERIES 11
