The breathtaking variety of work by Dorset artists including M 5 HONITON EXETER c b A MAP 10 UK WEST COUNTRY A former president of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists and a prolific author of books on oil painting technique, Peter Wileman has carved out an enviable reputation for himself in the 25 years or so since he gave up a highly successful career as art director at IPC. His latest solo exhibition at Lemon Street Gallery in Truro (opening in March) is very characteristic of the style and subject matter he has evolved over that time, above all the qualities of light that shimmer over stretches of water at particular times of the day, most notably at sunset and dawn, and painted in a richly colouristic style reminiscent, to me at least, of the much missed Donald Hamilton Fraser, and ultimately tracing back to the 1950s experimentations of Nicholas de Staël’s Tachisme.
