Its popularity soon became its problem however, market forces pushing it too often in the direction of kitsch. Things are rapidly changing again though as younger generations of designers come through. Massimo Micheluzzi at W iller is one such; trained in art history he came to glass only in his 30s, in a collaboration with Venini’s grand- daughter in the early 1990s, his work soon becoming recognised as of outstanding originality. In essence he has taken Muranese glass back to its roots – naturally inspired forms, earthy and intense pure colour and, above all, less reliant on technical glassblowers. The results are stunning – tough, yet delicate and vibrant.
