Tue–Sat 10.45–5, Sun & BHols 11–4 t 01926 742700 prooms@warwickdc.gov.uk t @LeamSpaArtGall f Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum www.warwickdc.gov.uk/royalpumprooms Dame Laura Knight RA ‘Backstage’ pen, ink and watercolour signed, 11 x 7½ in Wenlock Fine Art (see listing on this page) Challenging those critics who accused him of a lack of variety in his subject matter in his landscapes, John Constable responded “I imagine myself driving a nail: I have driven it some way and by persevering I may drive it home.” It's a point of view with which one imagines Colin Bishop, at his easel on Briantspuddle Heath and Ball Hill near Plush in deepest Dorset, has a great deal of sympathy. All the paintings in his current show at Brownsword Hepworth were painted there, on the spot – and for some years past too, Bishop has compared himself to an agricultural worker from the past, “woven into the fabric of the place.” Titled by the starting and finishing times of a particular painting, these are organic sculpture-paintings, richly coloured and with an intense sense of time and place.
