GALLERIES

18 GALLERIES OCTOBER 2017 When Edinburgh Festival director Frank Dunlop invited me to curate two shows in 1986 and ‘87, I didn't expect to be reprising the act 30 years on. But a decision to celebrate the iconic 1987 ‘Vigorous Imagination’ exhibition jointly at Glasgow's Roger Billcliffe Gallery and Edinburgh's Fine Art Society, required it. The first ever lead show of contemporary Scottish art at the Edinburgh Festival, it filled the National Gallery ofModern Art, was loved by the public, hated by some critics and became a phenomenal success. The 17 young artists, like Braham, Campbell, Colvin, Currie, Howson, Mach, Redfern, Wiszniewski, most from Glasgow, were suddenly in the history books. This time both shows include major new work while Edinburgh also features historic 1987 pictures. Another landmark. The translucent qualities of watercolour and the artist’s evident enjoyment of the Yorkshire Dales might account for the great sense of freedom and joie de vivre in these works. by appt t 07932 621261 www.rachelgrimmerpaintings.com MAP 6 ENGLAND NORTH M 5 3 M 6 M 6 M 6 5 M 1 M 6 2 M 6 2 A 6 3 1 A 4 6 A 6 6 A 1 7 0 A 1 9 A 6 4 CHESTER WREXHAM LLANGOLLEN LINCO GAINSBOROUGH WHITBY THIRSK SCARBOROUGH DARLINGTON BARNARD CASTLE PENRITH KESWICK LANCASTER HUDDERSFIELD HALIFAX BLACKBURN PRESTON BOLTON YORK KENDAL SADDLEWORTH MACCLESFIELD HARTLEPOOL RIPON WAKEFIELD BRIDLINGTON STAITHES OLDHAM CHORLEY TODMORDEN SEDBERGH ESS-ON-WINDERMERE HARROGATE STOKESLEY DANBY BEVERLEY BUXTON STOKE-ON-TRENT DERBY NOTTINGHAM BRADFORD LEEDS MANCHESTER HULL SHEFFIELD MIDDLESBROUGH DONCASTER IVERPOOL a b c f g d e SETTLE BARTON UPON HUMBER GRIMSBY AD LANCASHIRE d WATER STREET GALLERY 25 Water Street, Todmorden, Lancs OL14 5AB Mike Holcroft: The Road.
