More familiar to most people for
her distinctive portraits of
distinguished public figures –
Sir Chris Hoy, Dame Judi Dench
and Michael Frayn among them –
Scottish-born, London-based
Jennifer McRae is, in truth, a
painter of versatility as the
superb conversation pieces,
botanical studies and still lifes
that form her 10th anniversary
exhibition at the
Thackeray
Gallery
make delightfully clear.
The painting that gives the show
its title, ‘Hinterland,’ is a good
example, revealing an artist with
a nimble, witty and curious mind.
Showing two identically dressed
young women seated at a lavish
open air tea table, surrounded by
birds and flowers and set against
a fantasy view of the St Paul‘s
river front, its pale, luminous
colour and wiry delicate drawing
provide a truly haunting and
memorable image.
