Already her imaginative programming is winning her critical notice. Her latest show, sharply entitled ‘Hard-boiled Wonderland’, surely deserves to win her a few more, with three very strong painters – Marcelle Hanselaar, Rui Matsunaga and Nahem Shoa. The title provides a clue to the Surrealistic threads that run between their stylistically different work – the troubled times we live in; Hanselaar’s women painted with a seering mix of expressionist technique and dark fantasy, Matsunaga’s Tanguy-esque fairytales, dark and laconic, and Shoa’s vibrantly coloured, ferociously painted figurescapes, are inescapably concerned with the present and spare no feelings.
