He regularly returns to subjects which have been previously visited by such illustrious predecessors as JWM Turner and Alexander Nasmyth. In his latest exhibition at The Scottish Gallery Draper pays homage to the ‘father of Scottish landscape’ with a re-working –in his preferred pastels –of Nasmyth’s renowned view of Tantallon Castle with The Bass Rock. This, along with his Turneresque sublime romances on the remote wind swept peaks of Ben Ledi, show that Draper has developed a more complex approach to his art. With assured confidence he is now also able to set up a fascinating stylistic dialogue with the great landscapists of the past.
