Showing Claude Venard, Gustave Singier, Jacques Germain, John Levée, Olivier Debré, Trained at the Glasgow School of Art in the late 60s under Alexander Goudie and James Robertson, Robert Kelsey went into teaching for the next quarter of a century before, in 1995, having had his first successful show at Thompson’s Gallery the previous year, he made the brave decision to try and live by his work. With some 20 shows at Thompson’s over the years and a clutch of distinguished patrons behind him, the Duke of Bedford and the Fleming Collection among them, it has proved a huge success and with his extremely skilful and exhilarating updating of the Scottish Colourist tradition, it is not hard to see why. West Coast of Scotland subjects predominate of course but Suffolk, Cornwall and the Mediterranean feature too, and more recently, London. NU THUMB nail Robert Kelsey ‘Summer Evening, Loch Crinan’
