It was a long apprenticeship too, undertaken in Sweden, where this Scots- born artist and his wife went to live in the mid-1980s. Again, thinking Nordic gloom, this could seem like a perverse decision but he observes “working in Scandanavia makes you aware light is not a constant but always in motion” and it is this which gives these remarkable paintings their often powerful sense of mood and atmosphere.
