The book examines relationships between Freud and Bacon, Manet and Degas, Matisse and Picasso, Pollock and de BOOK review Kooning, tracking the creative energies and resentment. Despite the expanse ofyears covered and shifts within the tales ofeach pair, Smee builds up a clear picture ofModernism as a coherent movement. Sensitively and authoritatively delivered, this is a clear account ofwhy artistic relationships, which were so often destructive, were crucial for these painters of modern life. Frances Allitt
