Brilliant pragmatist, imperishable BOOK review aesthete, fervent preservationist, he was full of contradictions – ‘fond of talking’ yet resigning from clubs, too embarrassed to speak to fellow members. Stourton modestly says his biography is only 'notes towards a definition'. It is hoped that other archives, including Clark's protégé Bryan Robertson’s, will continue to throw light on this extraordinary figure of the 20th century art world. Sarah Drury
