The gallery stages rotating exhibitions oflocal and PENZANCE In 1930 Paul Nash’s wife gave him an American pocket Kodak camera and, as John Piper later observed, with his “economical and obscure eye . . . his new toy at once became a valuable toy” allowing him, for the last 16 years ofhis life, something which would act both as an immensely valuable aide mémoire to pin down those momentary casts oflight on a landscape that, for him, defined its inward character, and also to record those aspects ofit that he would never paint directly but which would nonetheless be translated into his intensely evocative paintings. This group of25 images at Abbott and Holder , selected by Piper in 1978 and printed from the negative originals in the Tate , provides a stunningly direct route into the nature ofNash’s complex visual thinking.
