Galleries - May 2015

With the death of Bert Irvin in March, Trevor Bell is, at 85, one of the last survivors of a great post-war generation of British abstractionists. The only puzzle is why such a major figure has never enjoyed quite the UK reputation he should have. Huge early success may have had somethingto do with it – a major show at Bryan Robertson’s White- chapel Gallery in 1973 led to an invitation to teach in the USA and he didn’t return to the UK until 1996. That move to the USA, however, led him to paint the large, often intensely coloured, and exotically shaped canvases (curved romboids for example) for which he is now perhaps best known – and still paints with an undiminished vigour and originality. Lookingagain at the works in this month’s show at Waterhouse & Dodd, one is also particularly struck by the paradoxical delicacy of the great sweeping marks or strokes that animate these large painterly surfaces, often reminiscent of Japanese calligraphy.
