Galleries - July 2015

C6 CORNWALL AND WEST COUNTRY GALLERIES JULY 2015 Landscape’ is no exception with Jeanette Hayes’ dynamic landscape pastels and oils, Paul Denham’s evocative moorland scenes and Edward Kelly’s richly complex Modernist works nicely set off by Lucy Lutyens’ elegant bird-like or botanically influenced small bronzes. A few miles further on is Bridport and West Bay, the place that probably set the whole Dorset art-scene off back in the Noughties, a town where art seems almost the dominant activity these days. Alongside the Bridport Art Centre, the place that has set the pace here is Sladers Yard. Their series of immaculately curated solo shows by the region’s leading artists and crafts people are held almost all the year round, and complemented by regular top- notch jazz concerts, poetry events and a terrific restaurant. Currently it is the work of much- respected landscape painter Julian Bailey, top ceramicist Richard Batterham and furniture designer Petter Southall. Bridport’s West Bay is also home to The Old Timberyard with artists’ studios for Amanda Wallwork, Jon Adam and Richard Wilson as well as a changing exhibition space – currently showingKatarina Rose’s complex miniature worlds inside boxes. At the eastern end of the Dorset coastline try and take in two galleries doing equally imaginative work supporting Dorset and nationally-based artists – The Gallery at 41 at Corfe Castle and TZB Southbourne in Bournemouth. Headingup north-west, almost to the Bristol Channel is the remarkable Atkinson Gallery. Remarkable because it is a gallery based in a school – Millfield – which has for many years been runningsuperb exhibitions – solo shows and open competitions of a quite astonishingly high standard and of a very contemporary character. Their current exhibition, entitled ‘Taking Control’, which features drawings from a 40 year period by the critically well-regarded, Somerset-based sculptor Toni Davey, is a very good example. Intensely abstract and geometric in character, Davey’s chosen sculptural medium has become paper – folded, drawn, laser-cut. With pin boards and collections of objects from her studio, this show also aims to give insight into her workingpractices.
