Philip Vann Joan Eardley by Christopher Andreae, 198pp, 176 col. ills, 15 b/w, Lund Humphries hbk, 40 This beautifully illustrated, lucidly written monograph is an absorbing study of a powerfully original modern British artist, Joan Eardley (1921-63). A fresh, objective assessment of her work and her life was very much due – and Andreae delivers that. He identifies her as an ‘indefatigable self-educator’, her expressionism inspired by sources from El Greco to Soutine and later Pollock – but stresses ‘her primary inspiration’ as ‘direction observation and experience of nature’ in places she loved well. A searching wild restlessness is seen in tough, poignantly compassionate portraits of Glasgow tenement children, luminous pictures of cornstacks and summer grasses, and increasingly elemental, challengingly abstracted seascapes made in the Scottish fishing village of Catterline. The paradoxes of her character – its wild recklessness as well as gentle tenderness – are well conveyed in the text. Philip Vann
