Auctions: on the COVER Fred Yates at John Martin Fred Yates, best known for his crowded figure scenes, was born in Urmston, Lancashire in 1922. His working life as a clerk was interrupted by the war when he joined the Grenadier Guards. Having taken up painting in the years afterwards he trained to be a teacher, working in Brighton and Cornwall where he lived a nomadic if not spartan existence. Moving to Francein the1990s hebegan to attract commercial success. He died in 2008 and is becoming a cult figure to many, particularly some young artists, with posthumous sell out shows both in Franceand lately at John Martin Chelsea .
