Participating galleries include: Abbott and Holder ARTSHOUSE Babbington Fine Art Percy Barkes Baron Fine Art Beaux Arts Nicholas Bowlby Byard Art Camburn Fine Art Marcus Campbell Art Books The Canon Gallery City & Guilds of London Coombe Gallery Sarah Colegrave Most art fairs confine themselves to a comparatively limited historical span – Modern British or Contemporary for example – or a geographical region, Asia, Africa, a fact which makes the Works on Paper Fair (5-8 February) a distinctly interesting odd one out, the only condition of entry being that, whether Old Master or Modern, watercolour or photograph, drawing or print, it has to be on paper. It makes for some nicely stimulating mixes – one moment you're looking at a Rembrandt etching or an 18th century watercolour by Paul Sandby, the next a Picasso print from 200 years later or a great 1930s photograph! The dealers like it – there are 40 of them returning for the 6th year at its attractive Science Museum venue, all of them top names in their field – and the public seem to also which, with the opportunity to pick up 'big name' artists for considerably less than an oil on canvas and prices ranging from £250 upwards to £75,000, is hardly surprising. Then there are the special events – a talk on Turner from the curator at Petworth, prizewinning works on paper from artists showing at this year's National Open Art Competition and printmaking workshops from City & Guilds Art School among them – and a loan exhibition of some 30 works by the wonderful 20th century watercolourist Alan Sorrell (1904-1974). “The Man who Created Roman Britain” as the publicists love to say, his atmospheric and imaginative visual reconstructions of British archaeological sites brought alive countless children's and historical text books in the post-war period.
