Until Dec 6. Plus our BOOK review Complete Guide to Watercolour Painting by William Newton Search Press, hbk, £16 If there is one criticism about this book, it is that William Newton makes it all look so damned easy. Whether it be a Thames barge at low water at Pin Mill, an Essex village street, a Tuscan hilltop town in the midday heat, a still life or a portrait, he uses the same skills in preparation, application of paint and choice of paper. There are six step-by-step examples of how to achieve the effect of light on water, of shadows under a tree, a snow scene in the Fens or architectural details. It is said that a self-taught man usually has a poor teacher and a worse student, but Mr Newton certainly bucks that trend with a bravura display of painterly skills, and an astonishing way of handling tone and using colour. Whether just starting out, or in need of a brush up, literally, on this most difficult of mediums, this is the book for you. Don Grant
