The depths and layers emerge in striking three- dimensional images, where circles and whorls of bright colours jump out of a black background. Anthony Scott. New Works. Apr 16–May 16. Giving all that up in the 90s, Balmer returned to painting again and in the process found himself President of the Royal West of England Academy, an institution he did much to revive and modernise. Now retired from that, painting is dominant in his life once again and the work pours out in a quite wonderfully exuberant profusion. Balmer’s preferred subject matter is the landscape, cities and ancient architecture of the Mediterranean, his brilliant palette of bright yellows, oranges and reds punctuated with acute blues, whites and greens. Firmly structured they create an intensely evocative pictorial language. ( Bath Contemporary ) THUMB nails
