Trained at the Slade, his was always a contradictory, even contrary character: outsider/insider, rebel/conservative, a despiser of critics yet a journalist himself. He entitled his autobiography ‘Paint & Prejudice’ and confessed to being “the soul of indiscretion”. His huge contemporary reputation was soon eclipsed, it has been argued, because the subject of his most celebrated works – the Great War – was one that so many wanted to forget . . .
