Brian
Rice ‘Flasher’ 1967
Painter-printmaker Brian Rice’s
50 year career has been, by any
standards, a slow-burning and
distinctly unconventional one
that included, from the late 70s,
giving up on the London art-
world and going to run a small
50 acre farm in West Dorset. This
he somehow managed to
combine with teaching at
Brighton for 19 years but there
was, for a decade or more, little
new work and no shows. Then,
suddenly, in the early 90s he got
going again with a vengeance, to
the point where a massive new
catalogue raisonné of the prints
has just been published, an early
works show in London (at the
Redfern
last month) and this
important retrospective exhibition
of his prints at
Belgrave St Ives
.
It was that time in West Dorset
that seems to have proved
crucial as it turns out, the marks
of ancient man he discovered in
that landscape adding a poetic
layer of depth and meaning to
the earlier hard-edge abstraction.
